Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) announced several bills on Tuesday, all aimed at liberating government privacy whistleblowers. Two of the bills call for dropping espionage charges against Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. Assange infamously released inter-government emails in 2015 during a hotly contested presidential race. Snowden released files that showed the NSA was intentionally spying on American’s phone conversations.

“Brave whistleblowers exposing lies & illegal actions in our government must be protected,” Gabbard tweeted. “Join me and urge Congress: Pass my bipartisan legislation (HRes1162, HRes1175, HR8452) calling for charges against @snowden & Assange to be dropped & to reform the Espionage Act.#PassItOn.”

“Every single one of us, as Americans, are guaranteed basic fundamental rights and freedoms that are enshrined in our constitution,” Gabbard said in a statement announcing the three bills.

“But we cannot take these freedoms for granted. I’ve introduced legislation to stand up for and to protect brave whistleblowers who’ve come forward to expose illegal actions within our own government or egregious abuses of power and to reform the Espionage Act.”

In 2013, then Director of National Intelligence James Clapper denied that the NSA was collecting data on American citizens. But later that same year, Snowden leaked the now famous files countering Clapper’s testimony.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is a cosponsor to Gabbard’s three bills.

HRES1175 reads “the freedom of news organizations to acquire and publish information is protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution.”

That app which occupies your child in your iPad for an hour while you “get a break” might be fleecing your child’s data. Child apps which may seem like educational gems might instead be selling data to third-parties. And that’s not good.

A new study analyzed child privacy in relation to kids’ educational apps and the results were as unsavory as we all might assume.

“My colleagues and I found that 67% of the apps played by 3- to 4-year-old children collected these sorts of digital identifiers — mobile serial numbers or ID codes that can be traced back to the device’s owner — and shared them with ‘third party’ marketing companies,” said lead author Dr. Jenny Radesky, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Michigan Medicine C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, told KMOV.

“The fact that two thirds of apps used by very young children transmit information about their online activity — information that is ultimately used to target ads — suggests that COPPA noncompliance is indeed widespread, and more enforcement is needed,” said Angela Campbell, who directs the Institute for Public Representation Communications and Technology Clinic at Georgetown Law, in an accompanying editorial.

If you don’t think this sounds all that bad, think again. These apps collect vital information, such as their exact device, along with their behavioral traits. If a child is impatient, the educational app understands this and compiles it. If a child likes certain awards, but not other awards, an app can sell off that data to a company that uses it to bait the kid into an offer. How a child learns can be tapped, as well.

When it comes to privacy, child educational apps are egregiously and absurdly non-compliant and many parents are asleep at the wheel.

When anyone, your child included, uses the web, they leave a trail of information behind, often with their ISP. This information is valuable, so an ISP can sell it to the highest bidder. The winning company then has information on you that helps them sell you.

Many people are turning to VPNs as a way to cut out ISP tracking. A VPN can help you stop ISP data collection and subsequent sales. But its also important to monitor which apps your child uses on technology, or even if the child should use an iPad or smart tablet at all.

One thing is for sure, we all need to help protect our kids data. They have no choice in the matter. If collecting your child’s data goes unchecked, that’s potentially a file of 18 years of behavioral monitoring we failed to stop.

A Federal Appeals court ruled that the NSA’s phone record surveillance program, exposed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, was illegal and potentially unconstitutional. In 2013, Snowden exposed the government program, which in turn led to his exile from the western world. Snowden is still wanted by the United States for treason.

The National Security Administration’s phone snooping program not only has been ruled illegal, but also worthless. In other words, spying on American’s phones did nothing to thwart any terrorist attacks.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals condemned the NSA as having broke the law when it secretly collected “phone metadata.” The program gave the NSA access to most of America’s phone records.

The court looked over a couple of cases, including Basaalay Moalin and our Somali immigrants who were charged with fundraising for terrorists. In both cases, the court ruled that the NSA’s phone record collection program did not contribute to their convictions.

“To the extent the public statements of government officials created a contrary impression, that impression is inconsistent with the contents of the classified record,” Judge Marsha Berzon wrote.

In 2015, Congress passed the USA Freedom Act which ended the controversial NSA phone record collection program. But that’s done little to change the United State’s government perception of Snowden.Former President Barack Obama’s administration labeled Snowden a wanted man and current President Donald Trump has done little to curb the label. Although Trump did say over the summer that he’d look into a potential Snowden pardon, so there is some progress in the matter.

Today’s court ruling adds to ongoing revelations that Snowden disclosed a completely illegal and unconstitutional program. The fact that he remains in exile, wanted by the United States, is a deep, historical injustice.

If history has taught us anything, it’s the importance of using a VPN to hide your web browsing from regimes which feel a need to spy on you.
